Keynote Speakers
Teresa Alonso Leon
Teresa Alonso Leon was born in Michoacan Mexico. She earned her Master’s Degree in Public Administration at Portland State University and her B.A at Western Oregon University. Teresa currently works for the Department of Community College and Workforce Development as the State GED Administrator and as an Education Specialist. She is a member of the Woodburn City Council and the third Latino to hold this position. Teresa has worked in education and nonprofit work for over 17 years and continues her efforts in motivating and inspiring students to go to college or a postsecondary educational opportunity past high school or GED. Teresa’s personal mission is to continue her work in areas where she can make a difference with social justice and education efforts. Teresa has been recognized by the Portland Business Journal, (40 under 40 up and coming leaders), New Leadership Oregon, and Portland Community College. Teresa has also completed several local and national Leadership training programs such as the National Community College Hispanic Council Fellows program, the National Hispana Leadership Institute, Harvard’s Executive Leadership Program and the Leadership Program through the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government Institute for Nonprofit Management in Portland Oregon.
Melinda C. Bullen
Melinda C. Bullen is a new resident of the Pacific Northwest, relocating here to develop and coordinate the new Diversity Resource Center at Mt. Hood Community College. Originally from the southern United States, and most recently from Santiago, Chile, Melinda has built a career in higher education creating inclusive environments that support academic access and success for marginalized students. Melinda completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina Asheville and extensive post-graduate work in Creative Writing and Intercultural Communication. She is a strong and energetic facilitator of inclusion and cross-cultural programming, both within her daily work on the college campus, and as an independent trainer. She has served domestically and internationally as a presenter and freelance writer on cultural difference, creativity and cultural competence, and international living and expatriation. A consistent theme to her professional and personal work is utilizing creative play to investigate and prevent cultural conflict.
Margaret R. Frimoth
Margaret R. Frimoth, PhD, is currently the Director of the Lives in Transition and the College Counseling programs at Clatsop Community College. Prior to working as the Director, Margaret was an adjunct instructor in the LIT program, as well as an adjunct instructor at City University in the Guidance and Counseling program, and a mental health consultant with the Tongue Point Job Corps Center. She is the founder of The Healing Circle, a non-profit organization that provides an annual camp for child survivors of sexual abuse. Margaret is a regional and national trainer in the area of domestic violence, sexual assault, women’s studies, diversity and oppression. She views herself as an advocate for students and promotes personal and cultural transformation through the process of education.
Sarah J. Sauser
Sarah Sauser, is a career coach at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon. She grew up in southern California and returned to the Pacific North West after serving eight years in the Air Force as Security Forces (Military Police). Prior to enlisting in the military she taught aerobics and weight-training classes at athletic clubs in California and Alabama. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Community Health Education and has had a life-long passion for health and wellness. In addition to her activities with the AAWCC Chemeketa Chapter, she serves on the Wellness Committee helping to coordinate wellness activities and promote overall health, fitness, and wellness for the college.
