- Karin Magnuson, President
Karin has worked at Linn Benton Community College for 10 years as a Training Specialist in the Business and Employer Services Department and now serves as Department Chair. She is a talented and creative teacher, facilitator and instructional designer. Karin has been active in LBCC’s local chapter of AAWCC, serving as co-President twice and holding a variety of other offices as well. She has been a regular presenter at the AAWCC Annual Fall Conference. Karin looks forward to the opportunity to grow and learn with other women committed to the AAWCC mission. In her time away from work, Karin plays the bassoon in community music groups, loves arts and crafts and spends more time in her garden than she does doing work in the house which, as she sees it, is at it should be!
- Cherie Maas-Anderson, President Elect
Cherie Maas-Anderson has worked for Portland Community College for the past 21 years. At PCC, she has been a Service District Liaison, a Employee Relations Specialist, a Budget Operations assistant and currently employed in the English/World Languages Division. In the past, she has served as the Union VP of Membership, Grievance officer and served on numerous bargaining teams.

Cherie is currently the President for the PCC chapter of AAWCC and the receipt of this year’s Carol DesJardins award. “I believe that AAWCC is a wonderful opportunity to meet people and build lasting relationships that inspire a network of professional colleagues.”

- Carol Schaafsma, Past President
Carol Schaafsma is currently Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs and Workforce Development at Linn-Benton Community College. She started this position July 1, 2006. In addition to her duties at Linn-Benton, Schaafsma has served as adjunct faculty in the Community College Leadership Program, a doctoral program at Oregon State University.
Carol received a Bachelor of Arts from Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio. She began her career in community colleges at Chemeketa Community College in Oregon working in the Child Development Center and later teaching part-time in the Early Childhood Education program. After ten years at Chemeketa, she returned to school to get her Masters of Science degree in Industrial Relations from the University of Oregon. She worked for Weyerhaeuser Paper Company in training and development for two years before coming to Linn-Benton Community College.
Carol joined LBCC in 1994 as a Training Specialist in the Training and Business Development Center. She designed and assessed curriculum and training for business and industry, and implemented a computer-based basic skills education program for local manufacturing businesses. She became Director of Professional and Business Development in 1997 and served in that capacity until 2001, when she was promoted to Director of Curriculum and Instructional Programs. In this capacity, Carol worked with faculty to develop new programs, promote the use of technology, and provide staff development opportunities, including the development of a new Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence. She also facilitated the development of a new five-year strategic plan and an accompanying vision, core values, and mission statement for the college.
Schaafsma is an Accreditation Evaluator for the Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities. She is president of the Oregon Chapter of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges and past president of the LBCC chapter of that organization.

- Dawn McNannay, VP of Membership
Dawn has worked at LBCC since 1997 and is currently the Regional Director - Linn County. She joined AAWCC early on as a new LBCC employee. She served on LBCC’s AAWCC board for several years, including serving as secretary and Vice-President of programming. She has helped with numerous AAWCC fund-raising and social events to support student scholarships. Dawn looks forward to serving as a state board member. She writes, “It will provide me with the opportunity to "give back" to this outstanding organization. I would like to help continue the strength, passion, vitality and fun of AAWCC.” Dawn’s hobbies include boating, reading and a newly acquired interest in fishing. She has been active in a variety of volunteer organizations including school board chair, school site council, AAUW, and Salem Junior Women's Service Club. - Kate Chester, VP of Communications
Kate Chester serves as the Vice President of Communications for the State Chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC).
Kate is the Community Relations/Public Relations manager for the Sylvania Campus of Portland Community College. She has 20 years of experience as a public relations specialist – after obtaining her Master of Arts degree in Public Relations from USC’s School of Journalism she began her career with Pacific/West Communications Group, an environmental marketing firm in Los Angeles, where she focused on media relations. From there she joined The Lippin Group, a leading entertainment public relations agency in Los Angeles, where she worked for 10 years and served as a vice president for several years prior to moving to Portland in 2000.
A native of Portland, Kate joined Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in 2001, overseeing media relations and public relations for the hospital as well as regional programs such as the Providence Heart & Vascular Institute, Oregon Medical Laser Center and Providence Brain Institute. She joined PCC in February 2008, loves her role there and continues to freelance on the side as time allows, writing for a variety of local publications – the Portland Tribune and Community Newspapers chain, among others.
Kate was introduced to AAWCC by attending the OILD conference. She was impressed by the organization and its commitment to encouraging professional growth of women in the community college system. In her role with AAWCC, Kate networks with educational professionals throughout the state, and promotes the organization through local media.
- Barbara Horn, VP of Fall Conference
Barb Horn was recently elected to the position of Vice President Fall Conference for the State Chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC).
Barb has worked at LBCC since 2002 and has been the Tutor Coordinator at Linn-Benton Community College since 2004. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Human Development Family Sciences at Oregon State University in 2004. Barb served as Co-President in 2009-10 and Past President for the Linn-Benton Community College Chapter of AAWCC. Her passion for working with students helped her see how important it is for women to grow personally and professionally. Community college gave her the opportunity to complete her education and participate in the 2006 Oregon Institute for Leadership Development where she learned anyone can lead from whatever position they are in. As the Co-Coordinator of the Program Planning Committee in 2010, she contributed to the success of the 2010 Fall Conference. She felt it was an opportunity to help others benefit from what the organization has given her. Barb and her husband Hank have been married for almost 30 years and have 3 daughters Marie, Stefane' and Kim. Her hobbies include sewing, her horse and volunteering for 4-H.
- Lynn Melow, VP of Summer Conference
Lynn Melow, Vice President for Summer Conference has worked at Chemeketa Community College since August 1998. Her current position is with College Administrative Services as executive assistant to the Vice President/CFO, Julie Huckestein.
An outgoing person, Lynn takes pride in the many college endeavors and activities she has been involved in at Chemeketa. She served for six years on the Wellness Committee, two years as the chair. Her pet projects include the creation of the Wellness Inservice Health Fair and the pedometer challenges held for employees. Lynn coordinated the Inservice and Wellness golf tournaments. She also serves on many committees including the Holiday Social Committee and the Employee Recognition Event. Lynn was Chemeketa’s representative to AAWCC’s OILD in 2002 and attended the college’s LifeLong Leaders class. She participated on Chemeketa’s Portland to Coast relay team twice. This year she was elected as president of the Exempt Employees Association. A member of Phi Theta Kappa, she takes online and PE classes every term and loves the lifelong learning environment that is a part of the college. She was selected as the AAUW Outstanding Graduation Woman in June, 2009.
Lynn is a single mom and very proud of her two children. Her son, Ross, will graduate with an associate’s degree in automotive technology in spring 2011 from Chemeketa. Her daughter, Sara, is a junior at Sprague High School and is a 4.0 student. Lynn recently became engaged to her long time partner, Bruce Irvin, and is planning a wedding in summer of 2012. She loves to read, travel and spend time with friends and family.
Lynn is excited to put her energy and creativity to work for AAWCC in planning the summer conference and working with the state board!
- Carla Bee, Secretary
Carla received two Bachelor Degrees from California State University at Chico; Child Psychology and Social Work & Corrections. She did her graduate work at the University of Washington, earning a Masters in Adult Education. Her undergraduate years were spent working with at-risk teens. In 1990 she moved to Pendleton and started her career at BMCC as the JOBS Director. She worked there for a glorious 8 years and then moved to Roseburg.
Since living in Roseburg, she has worked for Douglas County Health Services and then in 2001 came to work for Umpqua Community College as their JOBS Director. "I thrive on the Community Colleges' atmosphere. There's something here for anyone. I have always enjoyed the challenges of my job and marvel at how our students overcome such obstacles to obtain their goals".
She spends her free time reading, traveling, gardening and downhill skiing.
- Becky Washington, Member at Large/Archivist
Becky works at PCC as a Career Services Coordinator at the Cascade Campus. She has been actively involved in PCC’s local chapter of AAWCC, and for the last two years, she has chaired the fall conference program committee. In this role, Becky has attended Board meetings during conference planning. Becky has done an excellent job of recruiting excellent presenters representing pertinent and interesting topics for our conference. Becky looks forward to working more closely with the state Board. - Victoria Flagg, Member at Large/Conference Registration
Victoria Flagg is a Part-Time Instructor for the Limited Energy Electrical Apprenticeship program at Clackamas Community College (low voltage) and a full-time employee at the Port of Portland. When she was at Mt. Hood Community College, she served on the MHCC AAWCC board for many years. She can also be found bird-watching, knitting, gardening, taking photographs, making greeting cards from scrapbook materials and rubber stamps, working out at the gym, and playing computer games on her Xbox 360 and Wii.
- Karen Sorensen, Web Developer
Karen is an Instructional Technology Specialist at Portland Community College. AAWCC inspires her to be and do more. "There's so much intelligence, laughter and support at the local and state events." She's pleased to be a part of this organization. In her spare time, she is going to graduate school, enjoys live theatre and plays a mean game of ping pong. - Jan Woodcock, Ex-Officio Member
Jan Woodcock has been a full time faculty member at Umpqua Community College since 1994. She teaches psychology and human services. Jan directs the Pacific Northwest Great Teaching Seminar for community college faculty. She is a co-director of OILD (Oregon Institute for Leadership Development).
Jan has a Master’s degree in Theological Studies from Harvard University and a BA in English and Secondary Education from Westminster College. Her past jobs include junior high English teacher, elementary school counselor, hospital chaplain, and YMCA Camp Program Director. She has also worked on a tall ship in the Mediterranean, a horse ranch in Molalla, and a youth camp in Kentucky.
“I love teaching in this small southern Oregon community where I can see the deer and the river from my classroom, yet staying in touch with a broader view of reality is essential to my well being. For this reason and many others, AAWCC has been a wonderful resource to me. I always get new ideas and a better perspective on best practices and current issues.”

- Julie Huckestein, Region X Coordinator
Julie Huckestein has over 24 years of experience in community colleges and is presently the Vice President/Chief Financial Officer at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon. Prior to joining Chemeketa, Julie worked at Linn-Benton Community College. She earned an AS degree in Business Administration from Linn-Benton Community College, a BA degree in Management and Organizational Leadership from George Fox University and a Master's degree in Education: Policy, Foundations and Administration from Portland State University; Other work experience includes seven years at an accounting firm and two years working for a non-profit organization.
Julie has been active in local AAWCC organizations for 15 years and at the state level since 1997 where she is currently one of the Directors of the Oregon Institute for Leadership Development. She was named Region X Director for the National Association for Women in Community Colleges in 2010. She has presented at various conferences on the topics of budget and finance, computer software conversions and leadership and is an evaluator for the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. She attended the National Institute for Leadership Development in 2007 and the Oregon Institute for Leadership Development in 1993. She and her husband Jim have three daughters, Rachel (28), Kelly (26) and Erika (22) and one granddaughter, Hannah (20 months). She enjoys spending time with her family and friends, reading, traveling and camping.
